We have included instructions on assessing and inspecting feet, risk assessment, and action steps. We enhanced the teaching tools and forms from the Lower Extremity Prevention Program (LEAP) and are excited to share them with our community of diabetes advocates.

Monofilament Usage Information:

By using a 5.07 monofilament (delivers 10gms of linear pressure) to assess for loss of sensation, diabetes health care professionals can immediately identify high-risk feet and take steps to protect lower extremities.

Our single-use monofilaments are intended for use with one client only. The store used and unused monofilaments in a dry, clean environment. For re-use with the same client, the monofilament must remain straight and unbent.

We suggest that after completing the assessment, place the monofilament in an envelope with a screening form and ask the person to assess their feet weekly and report any changes in appearance or sensation.  Studies show that giving the person the monofilament and asking them to self-assess their feet results in fewer foot complications and earlier reporting of foot problems.

This laminated brochure is a compact, but the complete pocket chart that lists the major steps in diabetic foot examination. Includes risk classification plus strategies for treating infections in the diabetic foot, foot ulcer classification, indications for different dressings, and a guide for footwear prescription. Also contains foot deformity diagrams and visual instructions for the monofilament test and ABI calculation.
